Most CARS advice is “read faster” or “do a passage a day.” That’s osmosis. It works slowly, for some people. If you’ve done it for months and you’re still at 124–127, it isn’t going to work for you. The skill has to be taught directly.
I’ve lived this exact problem from the other side. Adults who try to learn Talmud hit the same wall. People who grow up with it absorb it over years and mostly can’t explain how. Adults who start later either grind for years hoping the same thing happens (it usually doesn’t), or they go to a program that teaches it as a skill: start painfully slow, break down every word, ask why the author chose this word and not another, then speed up until it’s automatic.
I was one of those adults, at Darche Noam / Shapell’s in Jerusalem, learning alongside people from secular backgrounds, including chemistry and physics PhDs. Some got it and some didn’t, and the pattern was clear: the ones who struggled read for facts. They wanted to know what was true, not what the author was arguing. That is exactly how most premeds read a CARS passage. It’s fixable.
Most of what took years was Aramaic and an unfamiliar legal system. The reasoning method underneath — what is this sentence claiming, what is it merely mentioning, what would the author say about a question they never raised — is the part that transfers, and in English it transfers fast. That’s what I teach.
One passage. We take it apart line by line. You explain the argument back to me and I push on it until it holds. The first sessions feel slow on purpose; then we go faster and faster until the structure is something you see on your own.
The trial session uses a free public-domain essay. From session two you’ll need the AAMC CARS Question Packs — I don’t share their material; we each work from our own copy.
I wasn’t born good at CARS. I got good at it because someone had already taught me, slowly and deliberately, how to take an argument apart — and once you’ve learned that, CARS stops being a reading test and becomes a structure you can see.
